The hard ride helped calm the very worst of his fears. By the time he was passing by Bristol he was able to believe it was highly unlikely that any accident would befall Emma. It was also unlikely that he would fail to catch her up or indeed ride straight past her while she stopped for a rest, because, even journeying with just one carriage, a travelling duchess would always occasion comment.

Alex stopped regularly to ask if she had been seen, and ascertained that she was heading directly north. She’d set off very early this morning, and had two or three hours’ advantage over him, but the chaise had been built for Alex’s mother in her later years and had been designed for luxurious comfort rather than speed.

Perhaps Alex would ask Emma if she would like a new travelling carriage, one designed to her own specification and needs. One built for more regular travel, if that was what she’d like.

When he thought about it, she’d fitted herself into the extremely small space he’d made for her in his life and tried very hard to make the best of it, while he had made little effort to accommodate her.

He spurred Star to go faster, desperate to catch Emma.

As the morning ended, he began to wonder where she would take her luncheon. There was no sign of her at the first two staging inns at which he enquired, and as he left the second one he wondered whether somehow he’d missed her. It was busy and the people at this inn hadn’t been able to say either way whether she’d passed by on the road outside.

And then, at the third inn, he found her. Accompanied by Jenny, she was leaving the inn as he arrived in a flurry of dust in the courtyard.

He dismounted, handed Star’s reins to an ostler, and strode forward.

‘Emma.’

‘Oh!’ She hadn’t been looking in his direction when he arrived and clearly hadn’t realised that it was him.

‘Alex. Is something wrong? Has something happened to one of the boys? No, you’d be with them if something had.’

‘Nothing has happened.’ Other than that he’d come to his senses. Hopefully not too late. ‘I came to speak to you.’ He looked around. ‘I wondered if we could talk somewhere, alone.’
